Pronunciation of "eugh"

Postby jimgawn » 2006 07 10 0941

In rural Ulster, where I grew up, the word "sheugh" (ditch) is pronounced "shuch" - short u as in "hut"; ending in a soft guttural as in Hiberno-English "lough"/Irish "loch"/Scots "loch"/German "Bach"/Spanish "reloj".

(I've seen some references to its being pronounced "shuck", but "shuch" is what I've always heard, and said.)
