WebNameHost site undergoing change?

Postby Pebbles » 2003 07 24 1529

Hi,

the Webnamehost site looks as if someone fell on it and everything is squished to one side.

here is what I mean:

As you can see this is disturbing to say the least... I mean... IE can't see it! The horror... something Microsoft cannot properly show!

Well, I did find a tag that had not been closed, but could not duplicate the effect in any browser including IE that I have, before or after the change. Is it any better now? Is only the one page affected?

No it's not better, I took a look at the HTML and found this:

Code: Select all

<!-- End webnamehost top -->
<!-- end bbinclude -->
<table border="0" cellspacing="1" cellpadding="0" align="left">
   <tr valign="top">
      <td width="150" align = left> <!-- first col -->

<!-- #bbinclude "webnamehostNetLeftCol.html" -->
<!-- Begin webnamehost.net left col -->
      <table width="123" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center">

         <tr valign="top">

seems like something is trying to push things into very small columns. On my 19 inch monitor the distortion makes it almost impossible to read.

//edit: the white text on light green background made it difficult to spot the cut and paste error that was corrected.

The html code snippet is from your policies.html page.

And it is on all the pages.

Can you tell me which pages are grunged? The html code you cite is correct. The left column is supposed to be narrow. I have five browsers and cannot duplicate the problem you show in any of them, including IE.

I see the same problem as desmond. The hosting plans page for one.
Also, the navigation buttons on the right could be a lot more readable....that's probably not a coding problem but more a matter of opinion.

OK I went through everything with an HTML syntax checker and found some stray </td> tags in some of the files in question. I've uploaded the fixed files. How does it look now? And, what browser/version are you using. This is very difficult when I cannot see the problem in IE 5.2 or any other browser I have.

If the problem is still there, can you also tell me a page that IS OK?

I'm using IE 6.

And it looks like IE just does not like those two tables next to each other. I'll see if I can come up with a solution for you.

I got IE 6 up in the lab and went back and forth until I solved the problem. Plain and simple: IE6 does not parse multiple tables correctly. IE 5.2, Camino, Safari, Netscape, Mozilla, and Omni Web all parsed the tables correctly, but IE 6 on Windows does not. By rearanging things so the latter part of the page was all inside a single table, I appear to have solved the problem. Took many hours to work around this MS error.
